First test of shipborne VTOL UAV ZALA 421-06 is completed![]() |
The shipborne VTOL UAV ZALA 421-06 and airplane UAV ZALA 421-08 were flight-tested onboard the icebreaker on July 1-8. On the whole, the UAVs completed 10 flights amid the polar day. The maximum wind speed was 22 m/s. First mission was to check the suitability of VTOL ZALA 421-06 and airplane ZALA 421-08 for ice patrol and object search from the board of the icebreaker in the day and night time. For this purpose ZALA 421-06 was equipped with color day-time video camera with 26x optical zoom and image stabilization, and infrared camera for the night time. The supplied to Aviation Centre of MVD ZALA 421-06 with internal combustion engine and the electrically driven ZALA 421-06E served as a platform for the shipborne VTOL UAV. The flight duration of ZALA 421-06 totals 2 hours with video transmitted to the ground control station in a real-time mode via protected digital channel. Digital C-OFDM video link is the key feature of this unmanned helicopter. The unmanned airplane ZALA 421-08 with electric engine and plug-in payload modules (video camera/infra red camera/photo camera) is of special interest. The most complicated thing of using the UAV onboard a ship is landing on the deck. To solve this task a special net was stretched across the deck and the UAV equipped with special hooks glided into this net. “All UAVs successfully completed the flight tests. The experience obtained will allow to further modify UAVs ZALA and become one of world leaders possessing shipborne UAVs” says Alexander Zakharov, General Manager of A-Level Aerosystems. |
